Eastern red backed salamander, Virginia
This is one of the three common color morphs we see in the Eastern red backed salamander, (Plethodon cinereus,) here in Virginia. This is the slate morph and there is also a red morph and a gold morph. All of them a very pretty and quite common where there is leaf litter and damp areas. They are nocturnal hunters and seldom seen during the day.
