Another beautiful little construction. This one is neatly plugged. This means the mum wasp has laid her eggs, provisioned the nest with a paralyzed caterpillar or two, and moved on. When the wee baby wasp has dined and pupated, it will emerge and come forth to start the process anew.
Most of my Malaysia photos were taken in the great National Park known as Taman Negara, east of Kuala Lumpur. The further you hike into the forest, the more likely you are to find interesting creatures. This appears to be a moth cocoon suspended from a leaf. It was difficult to photograph since the cocoon was about 8 feet off the ground. Which is why the top part of the thread is not in focus. I also had to leave out a couple of feet of thread. I'm pretty sure the thread is woven from the caterpillar's hair. It may belong to a moth species in the genus Cyana.
This suspended moth cocoon is a different specimen than the one elsewhere on the page. The thread was much shorter, and I was able to get a little closer -- although it was still a challenge to photograph in situ. At least you can see the pupa within the cage. I'm pretty sure the thread is woven from the caterpillar's hair. It may belong to a moth in the genus Cyana.
